SuperDARN Data Governance and Application Workshop 16-17 September, 2026, Beijing

Context
The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) is an international scientific radar network consisting of more than 30 low-power high-frequency (HF) radars located throughout the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Originating in the 1980s, the network has grown to include member institutions from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Japan, China, France, Italy, Norway, Australia, South Africa, and other countries, representing one of the most extensive international cooperation’s in polar space weather. Today, the SuperDARN network comprises 38 radars operated by 20 research institutions across ten nations, and has been operating continuously for over 25 years, providing critical observations of the high-latitude ionosphere and atmosphere.
SuperDARN China, hosted by the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and operated by the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), is one of the three international data mirrors of the SuperDARN network. It provides data services to scientists around the world, with a focus on serving the Asia-Pacific research community. Through real-time data exchange and synchronization with the BAS(UK) and USASK (Canada) mirrors, SuperDARN China enhances the network's data resilience, collection, distribution, and publication efficiency. The workshop is convened by SuperDARN China, bringing together radar PIs, research scientists, and data experts from the mid- to high-latitude space weather community to exchange ideas and foster collaboration.
Objectives
The primary aim of this workshop is to advance fundamental research in polar space weather and intelligent forecasting applications under new scientific paradigms. Specifically, the workshop seeks to:
- Promote the integration of multi-source, multi-station observational data from the global SuperDARN network;
- Facilitate the development of AI-ready data products and knowledge bases for mid- to high-latitude ionospheric space environment research;
- Foster open collaboration among radar Principal Investigators (PIs), researchers, and data scientists in the field of mid- to high-latitude space weather;
- Advance SuperDARN data governance frameworks and data service infrastructure.

This workshop invites a broad range of participants, including SuperDARN radar Principal Investigators and Co‑Investigators, space weather researchers working on mid‑ to high‑latitude ionospheric physics, data scientists and cyberinfrastructure specialists, representatives from SuperDARN data mirror sites and data distribution working groups, as well as early‑career researchers and students interested in SuperDARN data applications.
